readings, America has perceived its power and influence in the Middle East to
decline, and Americans have consistently elected presidents promising
disengagement from the region. However, at the same time, America remains the
preeminent power in the region and remains profoundly and consistently engaged
there. How do you explain this dichotomy? How, if at all, do you think it will
eventually be resolved?
