1.Review the list of “Examples of College Reading Purposes” on page 174 of RAW.
1.Review the list of “Examples of College Reading Purposes” on page 174 of RAW. Then, select 2 of the purposes and, for each, compose instructions for a learning activity or low-stakes (meaning not major course projects) assignment that you might ask students to complete (individually or in groups) to improve their abilities to achieve the purpose. Then, for each set of instructions, explain why you have designed the activity/assignment as you have. Be sure to draw on/quote from/paraphrase the readings in your explanation. In other words, you will post the following:
The text of the first purpose that you have selected from the list on p. 174, followed by a set of instructions for the assignment or activity (written as if they were going to be given to students) to promote that purpose, and accompanied by a justification for the choices you have made in the instructions.
The text of the second purpose that you have selected from the list on p. 174, followed by a set of instructions for the assignment or activity (written as if they were going to be given to students) to promote that purpose, and accompanied by a justification for the choices you have made in the instructions.
2. Several of the readings address grammar, usage, language/linguistic variety and notions of correctness. Let’s say that you are assigned to teach ENG 111 at a community college. When you survey the students in the course about their linguistic backgrounds, you find out that about one-quarter of the students are speakers of “non-standard” dialects, another handful of students have gone through most of their secondary schooling in the U.S. but come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken, and several others are international students from overseas universities.
Describe 2 specific activities, assignments, or teaching strategies that you might use to accommodate this variety of linguistic backgrounds in the course? Why, drawing on the readings, do you think that these activities, assignments, or strategies would be appropriate and effective?
3. Provide 1 question that the readings raised for you. Please include both the question itself and an explanation of what areas of the readings (point to specific pages or passages) prompted the question for you.
