We began the second half of the semester
with some readings on secularism and
secularization. In particular we read about
“the secularization theory” and the
perceived intersection between the
decline of religion, secular society, and
modernity. Having spent the last 8 weeks
reading and thinking about religion and
globalization, your final essay for the
course will revisit this issue.
It has become almost a cliché for
academics and others to write about the
“resurgence of religion” in the late 20th
century and early 21st century. Prior to this
time, many of these same authors were
writing about the decline of religion in the
face of modernization, arguing that
religion was declining as a historical force
in the world and not a significant issue in
global politics.
Based on the reading and thinking that
you have done for this class, in your
opinion are these authors right this time or
were they right back then?

Is there a “resurgence of religion” in the
world as some now argue, or is the
current focus on religion and global
politics simply a temporary reaction to

the road to the secularized world forecast
by secularization theorists several
decades ago?

Note from me (student): I’m siding with the fact that the ressurance of religion and also the fact
that religion has always been around but
has been a hot topic past few decades as
events such as 9/11 has honed in on the
idea of religion whether it was good or
bad. Religion has been honed in on after
these recent events and had led to people
shaping their own identity regarding
religion and what it means to them and
now with self expression, religion has
become a big part of that.
