For this assignment, you will imagine yourself living in another country for a year and compose a 600-word essay about this cross-cultural experience. Cross-cultural ideas focus on comparisons and compromises between different cultural influences. Research on countries and cultures can help navigate cross-cultural influences. Thought experiments can also help us run through scenarios that might arise while working as a part of a global culture and give us a chance to create innovative situations to solve likely problems.
Professor Geert Hofstede conducted one of the most comprehensive studies of how culture influences values. “This does not imply that everyone in a given society is programmed in the same way; there are considerable differences between individuals. It may well be that the differences among individuals in one country culture are bigger than the differences among all country cultures. We can, nevertheless, still use such country scores based on the law of the big numbers, and in fact, most of us are strongly influenced by social control” (Country Comparison, 2018). While defining the cultures and identifying the social control certain factors can have, we still live as individuals and may find some elements of culture challenging and limiting or admirable and inspiring.
For this investigation, you will use Hofstede’s country comparison site.
First, select a “home” country. You may select the United States or a different country if you identify more with another culture. Next, select a “temporary home” country where you will live for one year. If you have already had such an experience abroad, please do not select that country. Instead, investigate a new location for this thought experiment.
Note: Before you begin, be sure that your home and temporary home have marked differences across Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. Suppose you’ve selected a new country that holds the same dimensions as home. In that case, the assignment will be difficult to write, as the experience will not feature as many opportunities to investigate cross-cultural influence.
This assignment has four parts.
Part I: Introduction, Continuity, and Change
Introduce the “home” country and “temporary home” country. Why did you choose this country as your “temporary home?”
Summarize your findings from comparing the countries in a few sentences. Use and cite your research. What are some of the similarities and differences between these two countries that you find interesting?
What is one of the cultural dimensions that you will maintain from your home country’s culture? How do you practice this dimension in action, value, or belief? Why do you want to maintain it? How will you solve conflicts that might arise from this cross-cultural difference?
What is one of the cultural dimensions of the new culture you would like to adopt and experience? How do you expect people in your temporary home to practice this dimension in action, value, or belief? Why would it be a good dimension to adopt while living in the culture?
Part II: Cross-Cultural Challenge and Problem Solving
What is one of the cultural dimensions of the new culture that you believe will be the most challenging? Why would this be the most challenging dimension for you? How do you expect people in your temporary home to practice this dimension in action, value, or belief? How will you solve conflicts that might arise from this cross-cultural difference?
About six months into your temporary home country, you have visitors. You may decide if your visitors are friends, family, or coworkers. Your most challenging cultural dimension from Part II is also the most difficult dimension for your visitors. You must help them to solve this problem, as you have solved cross-cultural conflicts during your first six months.
Offer your visitors two practical suggestions for how to manage this cross-cultural conflict. Explain how each suggestion will help them solve the issue. How will your solutions help them find compromise and adaptation? What benefits will they gain from applying your suggestions?
Part III: Cross-Cultural Goal Setting
Reflecting on the items from Part II and your problem solving for your visitors, set one goal for applying the lessons from this assignment to your life. What have you learned about yourself, your priorities, or your values, and how can you use this self-assessment for positive results in your daily life or future career?
Part IV: Conclusion
Share a substantive conclusion. Highlight the paper’s main points, restate the thesis, and share parting conclusions with the reader.

The paper should be written logically following the instructions above, as well as original and insightful. Label each part of the project (Parts I, II, III, and IV) to help clarify where you are addressing these elements of the paper, but you should also be writing a cohesive, descriiptive essay that demonstrates college-level writing.
The paper should be at least 600 words, in Standard American English, APA style, and 12-point Times New Roman font. Check your grammar, punctuation, and spelling before you submit the work.
