Advice on writing the dissertation
Your answer should indicate some of the main points in the development of
projective geometry in the 19th century, concentrating on the years after
1850.
You should consider the topic from several points of view (algebraic,
axiomatic, foundational) and in comparison with other formulations of
geometry (non-Euclidean, differential).
It is entirely permissible to rework material from your earlier essays into the
dissertation, but if you copy what you have written before wholesale and
uncritically, then you risk losing marks.
General advice on tackling a similar question is given in Worlds out of
Nothing, Chapter 31, where you will also find a description of how it will be
marked.
NOTE, however, that your dissertation should be about 10,000 words, and
that it covers a longer period – the whole of the 19th century.
Credit will be given for the use of sources (print and/or digital) in addition
to Worlds out of Nothing.
Quotations or paraphrases of material from any source should be
accompanied by a reference or footnote saying clearly where the information
has come from. In the case of a book or article, the reference should include
the author, title, date and page number(s). Quotations or paraphrases from
Worlds out of Nothing should be accompanied by a page reference. For a
web reference, give the URL, and a clear indication of where in the website
the information can be found. Failure to do this will result in marks being
deducted. Further information about
