Based on Peter Elbow’s “Believing Game” Exercise (TS/IS 31).
Write a paragraph summarizing your Underexamined Issue from the point of view of each of the “Ways to Respond” (Agree, Disagree, Both). Do your best to make each of the paragraphs convincing. You should have three fully-developed paragraphs written to complete this assignment (one for “Agree,” one for “Disagree,” and one for “Both.” Please review Chapter 4 in TS/IS on the “Three Ways to Respond” to make sure you’re providing a good understanding of a “Both” argument. It is not a summary of “Agree” and “Disagree” put together. The text refers to it more as an “Ok, but…” It should provide a compromise or different way of viewing the issue). Though the “Agree” and “Disagree” points of view may take place on either side of the extremes, try to make sure that the arguments represented in those paragraphs still feel reasonable and supportable. Try not to reduce the ‘other side’ to a caricature or cartoonish representation of a point of view. What might a reasonable person say in defense of that point of view?
