Assignment
African American History in Philadelphia Research Paper
Description
For this final assignment, you are to identify an African American institution in Philadelphia to visit. With our course materials (secondary literature, primary source readings/media) as your main research source base, historicize this institution (in other words, situate this institution in time and space/place). Possible institutions for examination and contextualization include longstanding Philadelphia Black cultural centers, festivals, historic buildings, houses of worship, organizations, and radio stations.
Additionally, work to arrange an interview with someone associated with the institution (in-person or via email, phone, or Zoom).
At the end of your research paper, you must include a bibliography of sources cited and/or consulted. It should include a minimum of 6 primary sources and 6 secondary sources.
Your research paper must also engage historical Black newspapers as a (primary) source base. (ProQuest’s list: https://about.proquest.com/en/products-services/histnews-bn/Links to an external site.; UPenn’s collection: https://guides.library.upenn.edu/c.php?g=476278)
If relevant to your institution, search for African American oral history interviews of people connected to the institution’s history and/or present. (UPenn’s collection:https://www.library.upenn.edu/news/diversity-stacks-oral-history)
Make use of the university library for additional sources.
Do not cite your lecture notes. Appropriate citations will come from the readings or media we engage throughout the course.
Use the Chicago citation format for your paper, which includes the use of footnotes or endnotes. (Chicago Manual)
Please refer to this page for general writing style pointers.
As a class, you may end up researching the same institutions and, thereby, coming across the same primary sources and utilizing the same secondary sources. However, the writing of these research papers is not a collaborative project. These papers are to represent your individual preparation, your unique engagement with course readings, your original writing, and appropriate citation standards. For reference to Penn’s Code of Academic Integrity, see https://catalog.upenn.edu/pennbook/code-of-academic-integrity/.
Research papers are to represent your original work. You may not use, or base any of your papers on, AI-generated programs. You may not use, or base any of your papers on, summaries of our texts from other students, other scholars/writers online, or any database of book/article/chapter summaries. Violation of this course policy falls under the cheating and plagiarism categories of Penn’s Code of Academic Integrity. It will result in zero credit for the assignment, and you will be subject to University disciplinary Reporting for Academic Integrity Violations.
