Career
Portfolio
Choosing a career path is a significant decision, and
for me, the choice to pursue physical therapy stems from recognizing a growing
need in the field. Research by Andrew DePrieto highlights a substantial
increase in demand for physical therapists, with expectations of a 28% growth
by 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This data underscores the
importance and relevance of studying physical therapy, aligning with my
aspirations to establish a rehabilitation clinic catering to elderly individuals
involved in sports. Moreover, Kristen Gasnick’s insights emphasize the pivotal
role of physical therapy in aiding older adults to maintain independence and
prevent age-related muscle decline. This resonates deeply with my long-held
desire to support the elderly, rooted in childhood aspirations of creating
spaces for their care and well-being. Additionally, recognizing the limitations
in pursuing kinesiology in Guatemala, the prospect of studying in the United
States presents an opportunity not only to expand my knowledge but also to
potentially pioneer advancements in physical therapy back home. Through a
combination of academic pursuit and personal passion, I aim to contribute
meaningfully to the field, addressing the evolving needs of the aging population
and promoting overall well-being.

One of the
strongest reasons I chose the career of physical therapy is because I am
confident there is a great demand to be met. Andrew DePrieto, an author, wrote
an article titled “Here’s How Much Money Physical Therapists Earn in Every
State.” Which discusses eye-opening physical therapy statistics and market
insights. In this article, the author exclaims, “the employment of physical
therapists is expected to grow 28% from 2016 to 2026, considered much faster
than the average for all occupations. According to the latest data from the
Bureau of Labor Statistics.” (DePrieto,2019) The author suggests that, upon
analyzing the data, the need for therapists will increase in the coming years.
Considering this information, my purpose of studying physical therapy under the
umbrella of kinesiology has a promising future with which I can fulfill my
professional, economic, and personal goals, such as establishing a
rehabilitation clinic focused on elderly individuals engaged in sports.
(ChatGPT).
Ethos
My main
interest in completing my career in physical therapy is to have a
rehabilitation clinic for older adults where they can recover and continue
developing skills that allow them to facilitate their daily tasks. Kristen
Gasnick, a Physical Therapy Doctor from The University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey, wrote an article called “Geriatric Physical Therapy
and Types of Exercises for Older Adults,” which discusses the importance of
physical therapy for adults aged 65 and older, as muscles and joints tend to
lose strength and stability over time. In the article, the author states,
“Attending geriatric physical therapy can, therefore, help older adults remain
independent and prevent other conditions that may occur from lack of physical
activity, such as muscle atrophy” (Gasnick,2024). The author suggests that
physical therapy can not only help with recovery but also prevent physical
conditions that can affect muscles with age and sedentary lifestyles. For this
reason, I consider the importance of studying physical therapy with a focus on
older adults as a necessity for the coming years, which will also benefit me
personally in aging correctly and serving as an example for my future clients.
Pathos
Since I was
very young, I have felt the need to study a career that allows me to support
others. My parents recall that since I was 7 years old, I always mentioned that
I wanted to have a nursing home or a center to help elderly people. Knowing
that with physical therapy, I can support an elderly person in improving their
life by gaining physical independence is something that holds great meaning for
me. With this, I want to have the intellectual, physical, and economic capacity
to fulfill my dream. “The field of physical therapy has increased in popularity
over the years. The future of the occupation looks bright as well.”
(DePrieto,2019) The author is suggesting that the field of physical therapy is
experiencing growth and holds promising prospects for the future. This
statement implies that there is increasing demand for physical therapists and
that the profession is likely to continue expanding. This information can be
particularly beneficial for my dream of establishing an elder care center. The
growing popularity and bright outlook for physical therapy indicate a rising
awareness of the importance of rehabilitation and geriatric care (ChatGPT).
What you can do that is unique
As someone from
Guatemala, I unfortunately cannot pursue a career in kinesiology within my
country. However, the opportunity to study in the United States fills me with
hope, as it would allow me to acquire knowledge that I could later share with
people back home. My aspiration is to not only contribute to the field of
kinesiology and physical therapy but also to potentially establish a new
pathway for these disciplines in Guatemala. My goal is to make a positive
impact on the lives of the elderly population by instilling healthier habits
and promoting overall well-being (ChatGPT). “This includes implementing
endurance training to maintain cardiovascular health, utilizing equipment such
as treadmills and stationary bikes” (Gasnick, 2024). Additionally, I envision
establishing centers where the elderly can receive therapy while simultaneously
engaging in physical training.
Academic
Degrees Needed
The first step to enter into a Doctor
of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, is to obtain a bachelor’s degree in which
the student should have completed prerequisite coursework in biology,
kinesiology, anatomy, and exercise science, among others. To obtain a DPT
degree will take an average of 3 years. You can specialized in different fields
of study biomechanics, neuroscience, pathology, diagnostic imaging, therapeutic
interventions, and so on (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics BLS, 2022). While
CAPTE accreditation matters, the main thing is that students from the program
assigned can take part in the required national licensure examination, which is
the case if the latter is CAPTE-accredited (if the program is not, students are
not eligible for the licensure exam; USA Edu, 2021). The GRE is compulsory to
be admitted to the DPT program, and candidates must apply through the Physical
Therapist Centralized Application Service. Physical therapists receive
extensive training in human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, exercise
prescription, patient assessment and evaluation, therapy modalities, and
evidence-based therapies (APTA, 2022). Students learn about musculoskeletal,
neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and other systems to treat movement disorders of
all ages. The fundamental goal is to teach students appropriate decision-making
skill in a clinical setting.
Colleges
and Universities are suitable for acquiring a PT undergraduate degree.
As a San Francisco State College
graduate it would allow me to become a DPT professional in one of the most
innovative health hubs in the country. It offers great opportunities for
specialization and has advance facilities and laboratories (San Francisco State
University n.d.). Firstly, they employ an anatomy lab that uses real cadavers
and motion analysis labs. Secondly, they are partnering with well-established
clinical sites. Similarly, DPT at California State University, Sacramento,
offers comprehensive courses taught by qualified faculty and partnerships with
local clinics and hospitals for excellent clinical education arrangements
(California State University, 2020). This program makes certifications in
strength and conditioning and foreign exchange studies available to candidates.
Additional
Certifications and Credentials
After the DPT graduation, candidates
will take the National PT Examination (NPTE) issued by the Federation of State
Boards of Physical Therapy for legal practice in their state (APTA, 2022). A
physiciall therapist does not need to be specialized to practice at entry level,
however they can also choose to specialize by certifying in orthopedics,
neurology, pediatrics, sports, and many others through the American Board of
Physical Therapy Specialties (BLS,
2022). This includes passing a difficult exam and completing professional
practice hours which is equivalent to 2,000 hours caring for patients in your
specialty. The practice registration in one of the ABPTS specialty sections by
physical therapists proves their wide field of knowledge, theoretically and
clinically, which they have obtained in that particular specialty section
(APTA, 2022). Specialty certification is another requirement for the applicants
of advanced clinical residencies and fellowships.
Additional
Training
DPT students must complete
significant practical experiences in hospitals, clinics, and rehab centers
under the guidance of qualified physical therapists (USA Edu, 2021). Full-time
clinical internships let students apply classroom learning by evaluating patients,
creating treatment strategies, administering therapy, and monitoring results.
Immersive encounters teach fundamental skills before practice. Many graduates
choose to do a recognized clinical residency program provided by the American
Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE) in
pediatrics, sports, acute care, and other specialties (USA Edu, 2021).
Residency programs provide advanced instruction, mentor novice clinicians, and
prepare them for optional board certification. After finishing a residency,
physical therapists may pursue a recognized clinical fellowship in orthopedic
manual therapy, neonatology, or performing arts (USA Edu, 2021). Fellowships
help physical therapists develop advanced clinical skills or new practices. Through
effective communication, patients must be inspired, educated, and given
treatment programs throughout rehabilitation. The therapeutic relationships that
individuals form with their therapist, enhance trust and must be accompanied by
rapport, empathy, and compassion. The most important skills are to be
well-organized, creative, consistent,, and attentive to detail.
Positioning and Leading in Employment and
Career Perspectives
Physical therapists contribute positively to
healthcare. The BLS anticipates a 21% increase in 2020–2030, faster than the
average for all employment (Fetters & Tilson, 2018). The increasing
prevalence of chronic illnesses like diabetes and obesity, the growing emphasis
on preventive care and rehabilitation, and the rising demand for physical
therapy services among the elderly are promising trends. Physiotherapists work
at clinics, outpatient centers, hospitals, nursing homes, sports facilities,
and private enterprises. Apart from hospitals, physical therapists are vital to
chronic illness patients (Fetters & Tilson, 2018). Schools, sports groups,
and corporate health programs may hire more physical therapists as the public
learns about the advantages of exercise and the risks of injury. By considering
their interests and talents, PTs may be proactive and select new careers.
Career Prospects and
Growth Pathways across the Years to Come
As the public continues to rely more on
physical therapy services, it will lead to an increase in job opportunities. Physical
therapists may work in neuromuscular therapy, sports medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, or others as the
profession develops (Fetters & Tilson,
2018). Focusing on specific
areas within physical therapy could lead to higher pay or faster promotion for
therapists. Knowledgeable physical therapists may create clinics and lead
others, educate them, or open their offices. The common academic requirements
for an entry-level position include attending class full-time, advanced
training, and fieldwork. Physical therapists who excel in leadership,
communication, and teamwork within their company may find success in
administrative roles within healthcare facility management.
Pay
and earning potential
Demand for physiotherapists is rising. In May
2020, US physical therapist base compensation averaged $91,010 (Fetters &
Tilson, 2018). Your
salary is influenced by factors such as the type of company, your skills, years
of experience, and the organization’s structure. A newly certified physical
therapist might earn $60,000–$70,000 (Fetters & Tilson, 2018). Most will
earn more by learning or advancing their careers. Specialist physical
therapists may earn over six figures. Clinic managers and owners earn more than
young physical therapists since they have more duties and business abilities.
The US
Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) reports that top-paid physical therapists
earn over $124,000 annually. Physical therapy is the hardest profession,
physically and emotionally, yet staffing shortages, long hours, and
overexposure to patients enhance health hazards (Alchin et al., 2018). Physical
therapy is best for those who enjoy their jobs since the benefits outweigh the
drawbacks. Physical therapy offers various job prospects, more responsibility and
a decent salary. Physical therapists prevent injuries and ease recovery, making
them even more crucial as health care evolves. By staying updated with industry
trends, specializing in specific areas, and continuously improving, physical
rehabilitators can excel in this exciting and fulfilling profession.
Building
a Gratefuleful Career Contribution
I understand the fundamentals of physical
therapy, which will enable me to improve the health of elderly individuals. How
diversified the field is and where physical therapists might work are
intriguing (Fetters & Tilson, 2018). I choose a nursing home or senior
center to start. I understand physical therapists suit hospitals, outpatient
clinics and rehabilitation centers. My study shows that baby boomers require
greater physiotherapy (Eva et al., 2019). Thanks to this trend, I may
specialize in senior physical therapy and learn about older people’s needs and
concerns. The higher certification and lessons I will take will let me help
elderly folks live independently. Through my studies, I have been inspired to
pursue a career as a physical therapist. My approach will help me reach my
objectives and enhance healthcare in Guatemala and beyond.
