Our final discussion focuses on how we can be change agents toward causes we feel tied to. It is common for sociology students to feel deflated and overwhelmed at the end of a course because of the sheer number of issues we’ve tackled together. You may have been frustrated throughout the term because your perception of right or wrong challenged you. This is all okay-we come from different cultures and communities, and this is what makes us unique, and what forms society.
We will focus now on ethnocentrism’s role in many areas of our lives, specifically in the workplace. Ethnocentrism can be damaging at an organization’s core, especially toward those who face mistreatment or feel unwelcome based solely on their constructed identities. People who exhibit ethnocentrism in the workplace are not only putting their careers at risk but missing opportunities to flourish and advance with colleagues and customers of different backgrounds.
