Case Study Essay – ANALYSIS
Assignment Guidelines
During assignment 1, you wrote a case (a problem that you shared) in the final part. Now, you are required to analyze that case from the perspective of HRM. ( find the interview analysis in the folder)
Analyzing a Case
Try to determine the who, what, where, and when of the situation or event. Often the most difficult questions to answer are why the problem arose and what can be done about it. Caution is necessary at this juncture. There is a temptation to immediately ‘blame’ actors who appear on the surface to be acting differently or unusually. This tendency to jump to conclusions and blame the ‘most likely’ individuals might cause you to overlook important organizational, cultural, ethical, technological, or human resource variables that may have had a crucial impact on what has happened. Often what seems to be apparent may not be ‘real’. Also, don’t forget that people’s perceptions, whether ‘real’ or not, may determine the actual outcomes.
Once you have provided a detailed description of what has happened, it is then easier to answer
the second question: “Why did it happen?” Again, be careful not to jump to premature conclusions
and be sure to take into account a number of variables that may have had an impact on the
situation – e.g., personality characteristics; cultural and socio-economic background of actors;
organizational position of actors; educational levels; changing environment/ context; existing human resource framework; technology; and group pressures. Guard against the temptation to select the easiest option.
Another question you need to consider is: “What was done to overcome the problem and was it
effective?” Here you have to consider the relevancy, practicality, feasibility, as well as the effects of
the chosen solution. A final question could be: If the solution did not solve the problem, what could
have been done differently? Here you should use your experience and concepts and theories
derived from the literature, as well as those discussed in the course, to suggest more effective ways
for solving the case problem.
You may also frustrated because your case does not provide ‘adequate’ information or
‘facts’ to enable you to make an ‘informed’ decision. Again this often reflects real-life situations,
where important facts are unknown. Of course, case studies have their limitations in that it is
difficult to provide ‘all the facts’ and still keep them reasonably short to facilitate reading.
To get the most out of a case, make notes using the questions posed earlier. Then try to explain what happened and why it happened using HRM readings, and relevant literature and theories. Analyze why things went wrong and suggest how they could be corrected.
Suggested Format for a Case Study
1. The problem (choose any problem according to interview analysis, make up some interesting problem that aligns with the context and that can reveal all the necessary topics mentioned in the assignment rubric)
2. Actors involved and their characteristics
3. The context in which the problem occurred (type of educational institution, its size, location, effectiveness, etc.) – a private school in Azerbaijan, the conflict between teachers and administration
4. What happened – you are free to choose any according to the interview context
5. Why it happened
6. Issues and dilemmas faced
7. Alternatives outlined and their feasibility discussed
8. How the problem was resolved
9. The effectiveness of the solution
10. What should (could) have been done differently
Word length: 1,300-1,600 words
Please follow the suggestions provided below while preparing the final Case Study Essay:
1. Use a word processor, if possible, with double spacing.
2. Write your thoughts and ideas using a clear, logical, and concise style.
3. Proofread your final essay carefully.
4. A bibliography should be given at the end of the essay.
5. Be careful of uncritical acceptance of popular or plausible ideas. Always critically analyze theories, ideas, and concepts.
6. All ideas or quotations taken from other authors must be acknowledged in the text of
your essay.
