This assignment is a variation of a film analysis. It covers Chapter 3 (Culture) and Chapter 6 (Deviance). It has three sections. Please read the instructions for each section carefully. Sections 2 and 3 require in-text citations. Do not use direct quotes. A bibliography at the end of the assignment is needed and should contain all sources cited. This exercise will help you understand how sociological concepts are embedded in our everyday lives, even in films.
Section One
To complete this assignment, select one of the films listed below. You can pick a film that is not listed; however, you must receive my approval to use it. If you choose to use another film, please email me your option by noon on Wednesday. If you pick a film you have already seen, I recommend watching the film again to avoid basing your responses on memory, which can lead to errors. For films with multiple options listed, pick the one you want to use. Section Two
For each of the concepts listed, identify at least one specific example from your selected film that demonstrates the concept without explicitly talking about the concept. Your response should be 3-4 sentences per concept. You should clearly state the concept, define the concept in your own words (i.e., do not copy and paste), and explain how the concept is demonstrated in the film. Provide timestamps. Vague references to the concept or a moment in the film will earn you a low grade. Responses should be organized in a list by concept/concept pairing.

For each of the prompts below, use specific examples from the selected film. When referencing the film, provide timestamps in in-text citations. Vague references to the concept or a moment in the film will earn you a low grade. Remember, paragraphs are 4-6 sentences in length.
Using the film, explain the concept of conflicting values. Identify and describe the values in conflict. This conflict can be in the film, between the film and society (dominant, subculture, or counterculture), OR between the values displayed in the film and your values. (Response 2-3 paragraphs; cite film and textbook at least once)
This prompt focuses on the sociological perspectives of crime and deviance. Select which sub-theory you will focus on for each approach and briefly explain the theory. Response to each prompt should be 2-3 paragraphs; cite film and textbook at least once.
Using the film, explain the functionalist approach to understanding crime/deviance. Pick one of the following that best relates to your movie:

Using the film, explain the interactionist approach to understanding crime/deviance. Pick one of the following that best relates to your movie:

Using the film, explain the conflict approach to understanding crime/deviance. Response to each prompt should be 2-3 paragraphs; cite film and textbook at least once.
The only sub-theory under this approach is differential justices. You can use this to discuss issues of gender, race, or class. Pick the one that best relates to your movie.
