The Black Panther 10 Point Program is one of the most famous “manifestos” of the 1960s/70s civil rights and Black Power movements.
Using the BPP 10 Point Program as a model, write a 10-point manifesto on behalf of your own community. You can interpret “community” any way you want.
It can be your racial group, your ethnic group, your religious group, your gender/sexuality group (LGBTQ people), all college students, people with disabilities, your neighborhood, etc.
You are going to write about and DEMAND changes of the top ten things that would most help your group. Each of those ten can only focus on one issue in each point.
(You can’t cheat like the Black Panthers point #10 and say, “We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice, peace, and people’s community control of modern technology.”–all in one point.)
Be thoughtful about what would really help your community in concrete ways.
Format for Your Assignment:
Introduction: Explain how you define your community and why you are choosing to fight for them. What are the problems that impact them the most? What would help and empower them?
Part Two:
List of Your Top Ten Demands in the format of “We want……”
For example, if I were writing a manifesto on behalf of community college professors, I might choose:
1. We want a salary increase!
2. We want free tuition for our students!
3. We want free textbooks for our students!
4. We want funds to attend scholarly conferences in our fields (history), so that we can keep up with the latest scholarship and translate it into our teaching!
