In this assignment, you will be examining the five maps That I will be attaching. Two maps are based on Ptolemy’s Geography (c. 150 AD); next is the first large-scale map of the world after voyages of exploration by Francesco Rosselli (1445- c. 1513); Waldseemüller wall map from 1507 that famously gave the name America to the New World (based on explorer Americo Vespucci); and Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) world map from 1564.
While looking at the maps, you might want to consider the following questions:
How did European’s understanding of the world change from the late middle ages to the late sixteenth century?
What accounts for these new understandings of the world?
How did these mapmakers build on Ptolemy’s Geography?
How did these new maps challenge the way Europeans understood the world?
Are these maps accurate?
Do they represent the real world? Or are they simply approximations?
What common elements can you identify?
What elements do we still find on modern maps?
Who do you think were the end users of these maps?
What can you learn from looking at these maps?
Each of the questions should be answered in about 150 words.
