One attribute of a self-reliant, lifelong learner is information literacy—the ability to locate, evaluate, and use information. When you are information literate, you are a critical consumer of information who knows how to access accurate and relevant information whenever you need it.
Chapter 5 of Thriving at Trident (p. 102; Box. 5.2) introduces a popular system for organizing and remembering effective reading strategies—the SQ3R system. SQ3R is an acronym for key steps that should be taken when reading college textbooks. Research supports the effectiveness of the SQ3R system for improving reading comprehension and exam performance. The system consists of the following five-step sequence:

SLP Assignment
First, you will choose a book from the list below based on your intended major. Please note that you will search for the book title first and then find the listed chapter within the book.

Next, use the video and pdf icons under Library Access for instructions on accessing the library from the Trident Learning Community (TLC) portal page to gain course access. Note: The instructions are in two parts.
Go to Online Library. Under Library Access are two PDFs with instructions for accessing the library.
Finally, answer the questions below on your chosen chapter. Once you have completed the assignment, submit it to the SLP 1 Dropbox.
What is the title of the chapter?
Is there a chapter summary at the beginning or end of the chapter? If so, what page(s) is the summary located?
List the main headings in this chapter. You may have more or less than ten and these are usually bold.
Are there any graphs, charts, or pictures? If so, describe one.
Are there study questions listed at the end of the chapter?
Are there key vocabulary words listed at the end of the chapter?
Describe in two paragraphs (4-5 sentences for each paragraph) what the chapter is about. Consider the main points of the chapter and what will be the reader’s “takeaway” after summarizing.
SLP Assignment Expectations
Answer questions 1-7 using a Word document. Present the answers in complete sentences and paragraph form. There should be 4 or 5 sentences provided for each question that requires an explanation. Be sure to proofread, as scholarly writing is important.
When you have finished, please be sure to include your name, date, and course name on the assignment. Next, title the saved file with your name (Example: Module 1 Case Helen Smith). Save and upload the document to the SLP 1 Dropbox.
Review the grading rubric to ensure all requirements are met. The rubric can be found on the assignment’s Dropbox page in the bottom right-hand corner under Activity Details.

Microsoft Office
Microsoft Office is required for assignments at Trident University. A free download of Office 365 is available to you as a student. Follow the instructions on the Student Support Resources guide.

You will see a Free Tutoring link in the navigation bar of your course. (If you do not see it, it may be under the “More” menu.)
Turnitin (TII) and the Practice Dropbox
Turnitin is linked directly to the assignment’s Dropbox in this course. Once you submit an assignment to the Dropbox, Turnitin automatically generates a value called the Similarity Score, indicating how much matching text (text matching sources or other written papers) is present in your essay. You can click on the colored square to see the Similarity Report, which shows the sources that correspond to text within the paper.
Courses contain a Practice Dropbox that is also linked to TII. Before submitting the assignment to the module Case or SLP dropbox, the Practice Dropbox may be used to view the assignment’s similarity score.
