For this assignment, you should create a study guide for yourself to prepare for the upcoming essay exam on the short stories. Your guide can be in any format, including but not limited to Word or PowerPoint. This is your writing process grade for Module 3.
1. There are four short stories. You hould make notes about the plot of each story.
2. List the characters for each story. Do not forget narrators and/or groups of people (i.e., nobility)
3. You should understand why the story is a work of satire by explaining what each of these stories is critiquing and be able to relate them to current real life issues.
4. Define the following terms and find the usage of the device in at least one of our four short stories. Then explain how the use of the device affects the story–simply identifying a literary device is a simple skill. At the college-level you should be able to explain what purpose the use of that device serves.
Satire
Irony
Verbal Irony
Dramatic irony
Narrator
Unreliable narrator
Embedded narrator
Parody
Allusion
Fables
Hyperbole
Juxtaposition
*While responding to the exam questions, you will be able to search terms online and use this guide, so it might be helpful to include links in your guide.
A great source for definitions and examples of literary terms is literarydevices.net
You can use any sources that are useful to you. In the exam, you will be required to cite all sources cited and consulted.
The short stories are:
A Modest Proposal
“Revolution” by Simon Rich
“The Rematch” by B.J. Novak
“Luck” by Mark Twain
