Prompt: Starting with a situation that you have struggled with, that you anticipate
struggling with, or a situation that you know someone has struggled with, identify a
problem that a college student is likely to face and offer them advice about how to
overcome that problem. Your essay should:
● focus on one specific problem that’s relevant for a college student and related to
the college experience
● carefully name and describe the problem, using sensory description and/or
narration to help your reader vicariously experience the problem
● contextualize the problem by quoting and/or paraphrasing 1-2 different
secondary sources, which may be popular online sources and/or peer-reviewed
sources, to assess the commonality or rarity of the problem as well as its usual
cause(s) and likely effect(s).
● identify 1 tactic your reader should not use to overcome their problem; this
“negative” tactic should be reasonable, and your task is to propose 1-3 better
“best practices” tactics for overcoming the problem in question
● propose 1-3 “best practices” tactics your reader should use to overcome their
problem
● distinguish or provide support for your preferred “best practices” tactic(s) by
comparing and/or contrasting your advice to similar advice offered on the same
problem or a similar problem; for this task, you should quote and/or paraphrase
an additional 1-2 secondary sources, which may be popular online sources
and/or peer-reviewed sources.
Purpose: Your essay should aim to identify and describe a specific problem faced by
college students, provide some context for understanding the experience, cause(s),
effect(s), and commonality of the problem, identify one piece of advice that you
conclude will least help the student overcome the problem, and provide 1-3 pieces of
advice or “tactics” that you determine will be more or most likely to help the student
overcome the problem. Throughout, you should distinguish and provide support for
your arguments by making reference to 2-4 secondary sources, which may be popular
online sources and/or peer-reviewed sources
