I attended my community health clinical at two different locations.
1. Food for All…..Abundant life Church
2. Round rock serving center
The first day of clinical was at FOOD FOR ALL. I didn’t know what to expect there, but when I got there, I helped arrange the tables and chairs and made sure they were all cleaned. Then we had our preconference with our clinical instructor. She gave us an idea of what we’re going to do. Then assigned us to different areas. I was assigned the kitchen at first with some other students, where the team leader/organizer gave us instructions on what to do in the kitchen, the number of food items to give based on individual and family size. I helped portioned Mac and cheese, sausages, butter, baked potatoes, and some other food items in a container and sandwich bags.
I saw all kinds of food items in the pantry, fruits, vegetables, salads, kids meals, kids toys, kids books, even some clothings donated by people.
The people in the community came with their baskets and shopping bags to get free food from the pantry with their membership cards and those coming for the first time will sign up to become a member. They go round the tables and pick the items they want and ask for the food items in the kitchen also but weren’t allowed to enter the kitchen. I was in the kitchen, I greeted them, showed them the menu and what we have in the kitchen, asked them what they wanted and served them based on individual and family size. I also rotated and stood by the door to welcome the people and offer assistance to them. I assisted some of them with their basket and shopping bags to their car and help them put it in their trunk.
The second time was at the ROUND ROUND SERVING CENTER.
We had a pre-conference at the Campus before heading to the location. Our instructor gave us a tour round the different sections of the service center. I was assigned the boutique section. It’s like a thrift store where people come to purchase affordable clothes. I helped other volunteers to sort out old clothes and put them in the bag. I also helped with dusting and arranging the shoe areas for men, women and kids. Helped the volunteers at the backstage area to sort out clothes and arranged them in the main area. I also assisted in bagging customers purchased items. Then I went to the pantry section to assist the other volunteers and students. The people in the community also came with their membership form to get free food items from the pantry. I assisted them with their shopping at the pantry based on their individual and family size.
I was fulfilled and happy being able to serve people in the community. I didn’t know what to expect at the community health clinical since I wasn’t going to do direct patients care, use my stethoscope, or check patient’s vital signs. I really enjoyed serving the people in the community.
It felt so good in my heart when one of the people I helped at the pantry said to me…. THANKS FOR ASSISTING ME PICK ALL THESE FOOD ITEMS. I FOUND OUT ABOUT THESE PLACE WEEKS AGO AND I RECENTLY LOST MY JOB. THIS IS HOW MY KIDS AND I FEED AT THE MOMENT. I really had a time at both places. I’m glad I was able to serve the community and put smiles on their faces. The only time I think I panicked a little bit was when they locked all the doors and ask everyone not to go out because corps were in the building. I didn’t know what was going on because I was in a different section and had my classmates in different sections with other people who came to shop. But I got relaxed when I found out that the corps were looking for a stolen car that was drove into the parking lot by the people that stole the car. I feared for the safety of the people.
