Narrative Essay
A Narrative Essay relates a story, usually to illustrate an idea, a feeling, or both. Although there must be a beginning, middle, and an end, most narrative essays emphasize the middle of the story and focus the reader’s interest on some conflict. A conflict is usually some type of struggle between two forces. The conflict and the resolution—the point in which the conflict is solved, faced, or eliminated—provide the focal point of the Narrative Essay, and, together, form the middle of the story. For this assignment please relate a story that discusses the turning point in a young life. The experiences this turning point provides changes perspective, is a learning experience, or provides an opportunity to mature—sometimes all of these.
Generally a narrative is written from the first person point of view—I. You may also use the second person pronoun, you, and the third person pronouns, he or she. There is also the objective, one, which is at your disposal. However, using “one” often makes the writing seem forced and unnatural. The type of story that you are telling will determine the voice. The most important thing to remember is to make certain that you keep the voice consistent throughout the essay.
