Starting college can be tough, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed or unsure. But what’s important is learning to handle those feelings. Success in college depends on how well you face challenges and stay focused on your goals.
Think about hard times you’ve had before. How did you feel at first, and what did you do to overcome these challenges? Now, consider what you’ve learned from those times and how you can use that knowledge to tackle challenges in college.

Deciding to go back to school and obtain my degree was a long time coming. When I graduated from high school, I did not waste time with starting my college career. I graduated May and by June I was a freshman at the Art Institute of Atlanta studying Interior Design. I was so eager and ambitious to be the first person in my family not only to graduate high school, but to also go to college and get a degree. Unfortunately, life happened. I was that independent girl doing it all! I had 3 jobs, one full time and two part time jobs that had alternating shifts. I was doing my thing and even managed to maintain a social life. I was burning the candle on both ends and one day it caught up to. Eventually I came to the realization that I was doing too much. Then life happened even more with me starting a family and deciding to have a career in sales management.
Starting school over again after so many years made me so nervous. I procrastinated because life does not stop being life. When that dawned on me, if life does not stop being life, then why should I stop being me? Obtaining my degree helps to solidify and excel the dreams and aspirations I once had when I graduated high school. Yes, my view of which degree type has shifted but the overall desire of becoming a college graduate has not waivered.
Since I still possess the same fire within, this time around I know better than to allow myself to become discouraged because life is life. Getting in the habit of intentional time for what matters has been a goal for me this year. Intentional time includes my family, mental health, goal planning, and now school. I know how to manage my time and make necessary sacrifices for my time along the way. In addition, I have an accountability partner through my friend, whom is also in school, to help keep me motivated and on task with my studies. Being intentional with school and being successful is not only important to me now but remains that way. Reason being, I am setting the example for my children to follow and to also make a better life for my family with a career attached to my college completion.

Starting college has been a huge step for me, and it’s been a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Looking back at tough times in my life has actually been really helpful in navigating this new phase.
I remember a time when things felt really tough, maybe a particularly challenging academic period or a big change in my personal life. At first, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of how to move forward. It was like standing at a crossroads with no clear path ahead. But gradually, I found my way through.
Thinking back, I can see the specific actions I took to overcome those challenges. I leaned on my close friends for support and talked things out with my family. I broke down the overwhelming tasks into smaller, manageable steps, which made everything feel more doable. Sometimes, I had to adjust my approach or seek out additional resources, but each step forward taught me something valuable.
From those experiences, I learned a lot about perseverance and resilience. I discovered the importance of reaching out for help when I needed it and the benefits of staying organized and managing my time effectively. These lessons have become my guide as I navigate the challenges of college.
As I embark on this journey, I remind myself that it’s okay to feel uncertain at times. What truly matters is how I respond to those feelings. I’m keeping my goals in sight, breaking down tasks into smaller chunks, and not hesitating to seek support from my new college community when needed. I know I’ve faced challenges before and come out stronger, and I’m excited to see how these experiences will shape this new chapter of my life.
