Drawing mainly from the Masterson, et al. text (though you certainly should draw

Drawing mainly from the Masterson, et al. text (though you certainly should draw from all readings) you will develop a community resilience assessment plan for a community of your choice.
TEXTBOOK TO BE USED: Masterson, J. H., Peacock, W. G., Van Zandt, S. S., Grover, H., Schwarz, L. F., & Cooper Jr.,
J. T. (2014). Planning for community resilience: A handbook for reducing vulnerability to
disasters. Washington D.C.: Island Press.
In this paper you should bridge practice and theory by integrating what you find in your community with what we have been reading.
First, select a community of place (region, county, city, neighborhood development area, etc.). I wouldn’t select an entire country for your scope. Please select a community that is dear to you and of which you hold some of your own practical/community knowledge.
Second, reference the Masterson et al book (and Wilson too) in your construction of a plan to assess resilience in the community selected. These readings can help guide the outline of your assessment plan.
Third, you might want to consider partitioning your paper so that it focuses on different subplans to assess the different community capitals. Tie these sections together to provide an overall assessment of resilience. You might also suggest different strategies for assessing each form of capital.
Fourth, I will be grading you based on your overall understanding of resilience and what you believe it contains based on our readings, but this project will be graded more heavily on how you answer the following questions. Keep these two questions in mind as you develop your paper:
“Where would you find information that you will need?
What vulnerabilities or strengths do you see in your community?”
If I were to pose a general structure for your papers for those of you needing more guidance, I would suggest the following:
1-2 Pages: Introducing Your Community (in general)
2-3 Pages: Outlining Your Knowledge of the Vulnerabilities and Strengths of Your Community
2-4 Pages: Discussing Your Assessment Plan – How You Will Gather Information About Your Community’s Vulnerabilities and Strengths (Interviews, Archival Data, Surveys, Focus Groups, etc.)
1 Page: Conclusion Tying Together Your Entire Assessment Plan
I have also included a sample assignment that received an “A”
