Part One: History of Sports (8 points)
This reading illustrates how our understanding of sports depends on what we know about the social lives of the people who created, defined, played, and integrated them into their everyday experiences. This reading specifically covers the origins of contests and games, starting in ancient Greece. Your assignment is to pick a time period and prepare a written overview of that time period. Your answer should include the following information:
Background of the activities (origins in religion? Mythology?)
Who participated?
Were certain groups of people (male/female; wealthy; peasants) excluded, and why?
What was the goal(s) of the activity?
BONUS POINTS: Examples—for this, include outside material to illustrate the time period you selected. You could reference/include a link to a movie clip, pictures, show a website, etc. Up to 5 bonus points will be added, depending on the quality/amount of material included. For example, one sentence won’t yield points, but pictures accompanied by a 1-2 paragraph discussion that contains specific details/points of interest would yield maximum points.
Part Two: Sports an Offer we Can’t Refuse (4 points)
This reading is pretty short—4 pages—and ties in well with our material on Sports as a Microcosm. For this reading, I want students to write a “takeaway”. A takeaway is something you found interesting, stood out as relevant to what we’re studying, or something that if you were the class instructor, you would want to share with the class. Takeaways are more than just one sentence—they are 2-4 sentences that discuss the point of interest from the material.
