Psychologists have found that “grit” is the primary indicator of personal success in life. Talent, intellect, and skill are important, but they aren’t necessarily a predictor of success. The following video will introduce you to the concept of “Grit” and help you understand this important element of success. This video is long, but it is your only content material for this week. Please watch or listen to the entire video.
Angela Duckworth: The Psychology of Achievement, KIPP Houston Public Schools, 2020
For this assignment, complete the Short Grit Scale found at the link below. After completing the scale, you will respond to questions over what you learned about yourself. The responses don’t need to be in essay form and you don’t need to worry about perfect grammar or spelling. You will answer the questions below and write up an honest assessment of what the scale tells you about your own “grittiness.” You will submit this as an assignment to your instructor rather than posting it to other students, so be as honest in your self-assessment as you can be and use this as an opportunity to reflect on how you can use what grit you have or build more grit in order to be successful in school and in life. Your instructor will offer you feedback related to your reflections. Your points will be assigned based on your effort to honestly and meaningfully respond to the questions.
Complete the Grit Scale found here: Angela Duckworth, Grit Scale
Respond to the following questions about your grit assessment:
Where did you fall on the “grit” scale? Were you surprised by your grit score? Would you agree or disagree with the score?
Based on what you learned in the video about “grit,” why do you think that gritty people are more successful than less gritty ones?
No matter how high your grit score was, how do you think that the ideas presented in the video and the concepts related to grit (e.g., deliberate practice, learning from failure, never giving up) have contributed to your success in various aspects of your life—whether hobbies, work, relationships or other?
What goals can you set for your education and your life that will help enhance grit and set you up for success? Come up with at least three goals. If you need information on writing goals, watch the following video to learn about SMART goals: How to Write Smart Goals Effectively | Lifehack)
