Discussion
Compensatory and Social Justice
Context
For this week, you will explore and represent the interplay of Confucian virtues within the context of citizenship through a concept map. You will also apply the key virtues associated with Confucian citizenship of shared virtues using a concept map.
What to do: Review the instructions for this week’s discussion posting.
Preparation
Read “Confucian Citizenship of Shared Virtue,” Download “Confucian Citizenship of Shared Virtue,”Thunder textbook, pp. 105-125 by David Elstein prior to completing this discussion.
Instructions
Review the concept of “Virtues of the Citizen” on pp. 115-118 of “Confucian Citizenship of Shared Virtue” reading. Identify 5-6 key virtues mentioned in the readings. Examples: benevolence, integrity, wisdom.
Brainstorm scenarios related to each virtue and think about how these virtues manifest in daily life and interactions. Example: a scenario could include campus community engagement and you would practice the virtue benevolence by volunteering for a community service project.
Some ideas for scenarios:
Study groups and collaboration Environmental stewardship Cultural exchange workshops Leadership with virtue Ethical decision making Artistic expression Random acts of kindness Respect for elders
Global citizenship Residential life and roommates Student organizations and clubs Global family connections Online citizenship and social media Global debates Global service projects Ethical entrepreneurship
Create a concept map using Miro.com or another platform. Here’s how you can proceed:
Create a Miro Account: If you don’t already have one, sign up for a Miro account at Miro.com. The conceptual map image has to be an original creation by you. Please go to https://miro.com/Links to an external site. to create your conceptual map. Signing up is free. Watch this video on YouTube demonstrating how to create a concept map in Miro (you may have to copy and paste in your browser to view):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_U5MUZNb7o&ab_channel=MiroLinks to an external site.
Start a New Board: Once logged in, create a new board by clicking on the “Create” button and selecting “Board.”
Add the Central Node: Create a central node by adding a shape (e.g., circle or rectangle) to represent “Confucian Citizenship.” Label it accordingly.
Create Branches for Each Virtue: Add 5-6 branches radiating from the central node. Each branch represents a Confucian virtue (e.g. benevolence). Label each branch with the virtue name.
Link the Virtues: Use lines or arrows to connect the branches (virtues) to each other. Consider how these virtues are interconnected. For example, you can link (benevolence) to (proper conduct). Use a text box to explain how they influence each other.
Add Real-Life Situations: Create additional nodes or shapes connected to the virtue branches. Label these nodes with real-life situations that exemplify each virtue. For instance, under “benevolence,” you can add “Volunteering for a community project.” Make it fun and creative by using visual elements (colors, icons, etc.) to enhance your concept map!
(See example map below)
Save and Share: Save your concept map on Miro (or take a screenshot of it) and share it with others in the Discussion board text. Paste the concept map directly in the text box to share with others (do not upload as an attachment).
Responses to one peer: Respond to one other peer by viewing their concept map, reflecting, and answering the following questions in no less than 150 words by Sunday, March 31st.
What patterns do you see emerging?
How do you think these virtues collectively shape a responsible citizen?
Example of a concept map:
