7th edition: This edition includes Becoming A Marihuana User (Chapter 9) and The Development of Feeling Norms Underlying Romantic Love among Adolescent Females (Chapter 10). You may do an essay using the essay questions for either of these two articles listed below. This edition does not contain the article on acknowledgement rituals unfortunately. So you can ignore that one.
Questions to answers
1.Becker chooses to look at marijuana use rather than use of alcohol or ‘hard’ drugs. Why? Marijuana is not physically addictive in the same way as many other drugs. Also, the effects are perhaps more subtle. So, how does Becker think one becomes a marijuana user? Does he think that some people have some trait that predisposes them to be users? Does he think that people become addicted or that it is so overwhelmingly pleasurable that people just have to keep doing the drug. Or does he think that some social and interactional process is happening? What are the steps or stages in that process? How does it depend on how one defines the situation?
2.. Here the authors outline indications that they found from hanging out and talking with adolescent girls about norms surrounding romantic love and how these norms are learned. Your essay should cover what some of the feeling norms about romantic love are, according to the article. Do these norms seem to be a “natural” part of human emotional content or do they have to be learned. If they are learned, how are they learned? Do you think that sometimes one’s feelings might violate some of these norms?
