Essay #3 The Bystander Effect
Professor Arms-Gradington
Background/Topic: The topic of the Bystander Effect has been introduced, researched,
challenged and confirmed for the last 50 years. While many have applauded Latane and Darley’s
efforts to understand the problems facing citizens when they are confronted with emergency
encounters, others have often asked if this is true, then what is next?
Connection: The purpose of the readings in this Unit was to introduce you to the topic of the
bystander effect, and give you some background and context to the term. The goal now is to find
a connection between what we think we know about the bystander effect, and the realities that
we now face decades later.
Writing Assignment: For this assignment, you will write an argumentative essay based on the
topic of the Bystander Effect. You may choose from the following options:
● Option 1: Define and discuss the bystander effect. Write an argument where
you agree or disagree with Latane and Darley’s findings in their simulated
emergency experiment.
By choosing this option, you must be able to explain and define
Latane and Darley’s conclusions derived from their experiment, the
diffusion of responsibility, and explain your position on their
findings.
● Option 2: Using the bystander effect as a foundation, write an argument in
which you discuss the bystander effect and what are the benefits and
consequences modern technology has contributed to it?
For this option, you must be able to explain and define the bystander
effect, and discuss ways in which technology/social media’s
connection to what it means to be a bystander in today’s society.
All essays options must include:
● A definition, context or summary of the bystander effect
● A strong argumentative thesis that follows the model: subject + opinion + why , making
sure to clearly state your position on your topic using key words from the prompt option
you are choosing
● Your essay must include a counterargument and rebuttal. Please make sure to
use the TSIS templates for introducing a counterargument.
● An in depth discussion in the body paragraphs, where you discuss, analyze, connect and
support your argument with context from the readings
● Support from at least TWO reading from the unit and TWO sources from the
library database (No Wikipedia, but GOOGLE SCHOLAR is OK) a total of 4
sources (You may use more sources, but 4 is the minimum)
● Must be 5-7 Pages in length (This does not include the Works Cited Page)
