Essay 4: “What do you Want to Know?”
Throughout college and, quite frankly, life, we need to better understand many things. This might be for an essay, to decide which product to buy, to decide on the best strategy to market a product, to decide how to vote, or to learn about anything! In this assignment, you will develop a simple question that needs some research to answer. There is flexibility about the topic, but it must be a question you do not already know the answer to.
The Prompt
You develop the prompt for this assignment in collaboration with me. If you are facing a specific decision you will have to make, we can use that; if you have an assignment for another course, we may be able to use that; if you don’t yet know which 4-year college you want to attend, you could research that; if you want to investigate a subject we discussed in this class, you can; perhaps you want to compare career paths? There’s lots of flexibility, which can be freeing but also paralyzing — don’t worry, I will guide you through this. Ideally, though, this should be prompted by a real-world question you have.
Audience
This will vary depending on your research question, but for most of you, it will be a co-worker or classmate. You will be explaining to them why the decision you have made after conducting your research is the right one.
Process
Identify what you want to know. Do you have a decision to make soon? Do you want to learn more about colleges where you can study for your four-year degree? Do you want to learn more about a topic of another class of future career?
I want to know more about why healthcare isn’t free- Revise topic question- What are the key factors influencing the success or failure of free healthcare systems in countries and how do these systems impact the treatment and management of diabetes?
Professor Comments: This is a good place to start. You will very quickly need to narrow down which country (/countries) you intend on looking at, as you can’t possibly review all of them in one paper. The focus on diabetes is a good idea, assuming you are able to locate material on how the condition is treated (and financed, managed, outcomes, etc). Make sure you translate the specifics about diabetes back into the first half of the question, as if you try to look at all of the “successes” and “failures” of multiple systems in multiple ways in multiple countries, you will not have much room for focus or analysis
Submit your final topic choice for essay 4 here phrased as a question. Revise topic if needed: “What are the key factors influencing the success or failure of free healthcare systems in America and how do these systems impact the treatment and management of diabetes?”
Pre-writing and research questions. What do you want to know and why? Why does this decision or answer matter? What questions do you have? What questions do you need to be able to answer in order to make an informed decision? In a series of activities in and outside of class, you will examine what questions you need to ask and answer.
Research Questions (these are incorrect according to the professor so please come up with direct research questions based on the topic question)
How much money a government puts into free healthcare affects how well it handles chronic conditions like diabetes?
Do things like health ads and regular checkups help keep chronic conditions, like diabetes, under control in countries with free healthcare?
Does having enough hospitals, technology, and trained staff make a difference in treating conditions like diabetes in places where healthcare is free?
Does it matter if healthcare decisions are made by one central group or by smaller groups across different areas when it comes to managing chronic conditions within free healthcare systems?
How do things like how much people know about health, their cultural beliefs, and having support from others affect their ability to handle chronic conditions like diabetes in countries with free healthcare?
Professor Comments: Each of these could in fact be a central question for a whole paper as they are still quite broad. For research questions, you need much more focused and specific things you would need to learn about. For example, in order to answer your question here (“How much money a government puts into free healthcare affects how well it handles chronic conditions like diabetes?”) you would need to know which countries/governments have free healthcare, what the annual cost is (to the government and to individuals through taxes or whatnot), how diabetes is typically managed/treated, what the outcomes are on average. Do you see how that one main question needs you to answer a bunch of other smaller questions first before you can then come back to the main question?
Research. After an orientation session with the librarian and learning about locating and assessing sources, conduct research on your topic. Identify at least three sources that will help you make an informed decision/answer your question. Document your sources in MLA format and describe the content of each. Submit this as an annotated bibliography
Once you come up with 3-4 research questions please search annotated bibliography using only this website and complete the prompt below. Attach the link and provide information with Minimum of three sources in MLA, with hanging indent, double spaced, and in alphabetical order. Each entry should be followed with 2-3 sentences, addressing what this source is (book, article, website, etc), what it is about and how you might use it to help you write your paper, if it is primary or secondary, and if it is reliable (and why/why not).

Organize your ideas. Look back over what you wrote in the previous steps and the sources you have found. Identify what you think your answer might be — this will be your main argument (your thesis). What are your pieces of evidence for this decision/answer? How will you structure your essay? Develop an outline for your draft. Submit this for feedback by Mon 27 November.
Draft. Now you have a road map (your outline), write your essay. You may find you want to reorganize some ideas, edit your examples, or adjust your main argument, and that’s fine. Create a complete draft of your piece.
Revise. Review your draft for coherence and structure. Are you telling your reader what they need to know and in an order that helps them understand your answer/decision? Are you providing examples and details to help persuade your reader? Does your evidence help you make your case? Revise your essay so that you are happy with it and then submit by Monday 4 December
Edit and polish. Use the feedback you received from your peers as well as your own proofreading skills to revise and enhance your essay/application. This essay will be going to an outside audience with the power to grant you what you want, so make sure you create the compelling and coherent argument you want
