Identify one significantly stressful event that you or someone close to you has experienced that could lead to adjustment disorder. Review the DSM 5 associated diagnostic criteria for that particular adjustment disorder and describe one evidence-based treatment approach to manage the selected adjustment disorder.
Joseph is a 25-year-old male client diagnosed with PTSD related to a series of traumas he experienced between the ages of 6 and 15. He is now experiencing flashbacks of these past traumas several times per day, avoiding situations that have similarities to these past traumas, and having nightly, distressing dreams that awaken him several times per night. What would you expect might be happening to him from a neurophysiological perspective, i.e., how does PTSD affect the brain?
Select one type of therapy and two medications that would be appropriate to prescribe to Joseph, include an explanation of the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles of each medication. Additionally include recommendations for initial dosage and a a follow-up plan to assess treatment response.
