Forum: Discussion 11: Potpourri of Videos/Articles for science of nutrition connections to course
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” With that seven-word maxim, US-based journalist Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma) started his career of reporting into a prescription for reversing the damage being done to people’s health by today’s industrially driven Western diet. In Defense of Food debunks the daily media barrage of conflicting claims about nutrition. Traveling the globe and exploring the supermarket aisles helped him to illustrate the principles of his bestselling “eater’s manifesto,” Pollan offers a clear answer to one of the most confounding and urgent questions of our time: What should I eat to be healthy? This message needed to be heard decades ago, 8 years ago in 2015, and still needs to be heard today.
To escape the harmful health consequences of the Western diet, we can either wait centuries for evolution to adapt our bodies to junk food (not going to happen!), or take a much more practical and economical path: change the way we’re eating. Something that’s a lot simpler than we may think. Pollan forced us to notice the state of our nutrition and offered us a simple seven-word guide to healthier eating: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.
Discussion directions:
Choose at least 2 of the 12 numbered links below to investigate (10 are videos; 2 are articles). You may find you will watch/view many since most are 3 – 10 minutes and very informative. Summarize 2 of the clips that you chose to view and include all of the following:
what you found of interest
why they are most impactful to you
the relevant clip’s association with the science of some of the topics we have covered (i.e. the science of nutrition related to what you learned in this course)
If you wish to include any ideas at the end of your post of other good, recent (more recent) documentaries that you think would be good to view, please share. I am in search of more solid films that indicate the state of nutrition in the country without sensationalizing. They do not have to be long, just accurate information, presenting issues we all face about best nutrition, nutrition policies and ways we can spread the word that what is available to us in stores now needs to change to more real, whole, unadulterated foods. Are you seeing the price of groceries lately!? But, if people chose to make better choices rather than eating out, they would indeed see their dollars extended by a few days versus one meal or a Starbucks beverage ($$).
The last clip, from Professor Yamamoto, is a great watch produced by MC TV. She is an adjunct here at MC teaching this course and also teaches at American University. She is quite active in helping people who live in food deserts, especially in various Wards of DC. A more thorough bio is below, including her 2020 publication about food access).
