In Federalist 10 and Federalist 51, James Madison provides warnings and solution
In Federalist 10 and Federalist 51, James Madison provides warnings and solutions to two major problems facing the new nation: factionalism and separation of powers. Madison believed that the new government could move towards tyranny, but through the protections of the Constitution, the American people would be protected.
Your task is to critically evaluate Madison’s arguments in both Federalist 10 and Federalist 51, using only the documents provided (Federalist 10 and 51), the secondary academic articles available here, your textbook, and your notes. Your critical evaluation should, in essay form, address the following issues:
1. What threat do political factions pose to a republic?
2. How can a government deal with those threats, without harming liberty?
3. In what ways does the Constitution protect against tyranny?
4. What makes Madison so sure that the separation of powers will work to prevent one branch of the government from becoming too powerful?
5. What parts of Madison’s argument are the most persuasive? Where is his argument the weakest?
6. Do you agree with Madison’s arguments? Why or why not?
Be sure to base all of your evidence on the documents.
