Assignment Directions:
Interview Preparation
Select a family with a child between the ages of birth and eight who is currently enrolled in a childcare program or school. This family can be a friend, relative (outside of your immediate family), neighbor, or a family in your early childhood classroom environment.
Review and print out the family interview questions found in Appendix A (attached below). You will be typing up the family’s responses, so plan to bring additional paper on which to take notes.
Arrange a time to interview the family. Your interview is likely to last approximately 30 – 45 minutes.
Be sure to let the family know that you are completing this interview as a course assignment, and that the purpose of the assignment is to build teachers’ skills and comfort level in engaging with families.
Ensure families that this interview is for educational purposes only and is completely confidential: names will be replaced with initials and any other identifying information will be removed.
Let the questions guide your interview but encourage families to share anything about their family and culture that they feel is pertinent, even if it is not specifically mentioned in the interview questions.
If the family provides minimal information, follow-up the original question with more open-ended prompts, such as “Tell me more about that.”
Post Interview Reflection: Reflect on what you have learned from this interview. Answer each of the questions below. Be sure to explain in detail what you have learned about the diverse characteristics1 of this family and its community. Use quotations from your interview to support your statements.
