Select one film to watch and analyze. You may select one of the following:
Citizen Kane by Orson Welles (1941; available on Swank); or
Dogtooth by Yorgos Lanthimos’ Dogtooth (2009); or
Singin’ in the Rain (1952) by Stanley Donen; or
Chinatown (1974) by Roman Polanski;
The Host (2006; Kanopy) by Bong Joon-ho.
These films may be available on Kanopy or Swank (Links to an external site.), a free streaming service available through the FIU Library. You may check other services where films are available.
From your selected film, select two scenes/sequences. Assess how the filmmakers use acting, dramatization, story, and writing.
Then you will write and submit a two-page essay (APA style) explaining how the following film elements function in your selected film.
Acting
Dramatization,
Story
Writing
Answer the following questions for which you’ll need to analyze two scenes/sequences.
What style of acting, as explained by Giannetti, does your film employ? Choose one scene.
If your film uses exterior sets, how does nature function as a symbolic analogue to the the mood, theme, or characterization? Choose a scene.
What kind of narrative does your film use?
Explain how your film uses point of view.
Be sure to write an abstract, use specific details about two senes/sequences, and relate to your textbook.
Ensure that you cite the film and Understanding Movies; failure to use APA style citations will result in point deductions.
Prove your points and be sure to name the personnel (director, cinematographer, visual designer, etc.) when relevant.
Do not use terms like “personally,” “I think,” “I feel.” Treat reflections as if they were short essays. Don’t evaluate these films (“Citizen Kane is a masterpiece with great performances”). Avoid a casual, chatty, gossipy tone.
Finally, your abstracts should mention in the first sentence what arguments you’ll make about the film you’ve chosen.
