***NOTE: You are not producing a written research paper apart from this. Rather, your goals are to give a short summary of the source’s main argument and to articulate how each source helps you to understand your research question.
You may choose to substitute other sources if you find that something isn’t working or useful.
Each annotation should include the following components:
a) First, restate your initial research question, and, if appropriate, whether you have revised it.
b) Bibliographic entry for each source, formatted according to the Chicago Manual of Style citation system for notes and bibliography. Include call numbers for books and edited volumes. As in the preliminary bibliography, categorize your sources according to the source types above (rather than the more usual alphabetization).
c) 4-5 sentences summarizing the main hypothesis of each source.
That is, what does the source argue or assert? What evidence does the author provide to support the claim? This portion of the assignment will require that you are very familiar with each of your sources.
d) 8-10 sentences explaining how each source helps you to better understand your research question.
Demonstrate how and why this source is relevant to your research project. What does this source clarify for you about your topic?
Be specific. Include at least one and up to three direct quotes (include page numbers in parentheses) that helps to support your points. A premium will be placed on specificity and clarity here.
The point here is to justify including this source in your bibliography. What does it help you understand about your topic? Be specific here.
e) Do a quick search on the authors of your sources and explain in a sentence or two what qualifies them to write about this topic.
