PEER EVALUATION MEMOS
You will write a separate 1.5-3 page memo to each (current) member of your group, providing that person with an evaluation and assigning that person a grade. NOTE: When distributing the memos, be sure that each is its own document, so each member only sees their own evaluations.
Before writing your memos, you should decide what attributes and skills are important in a group member. Then, set the criteria by which you will evaluate each person in the group. In other words, if you think attitude, writing skills, and effort are important, you should evaluate each member’s attitude, writing skills, and effort. I suggest you select three to five criteria by which to evaluate your group members.
You may have repetition among the memos that you write; each memo will probably have the same introduction and organization (headings noting criteria). In fact, creating a template with the introduction and appropriate headings would simplify the assignment. Then, fill in the sections with paragraphs related to the person being evaluated.
When writing your memos, remember to be specific. If you write that a person did not follow the group policies, give examples. If you write that a person had a bad attitude, give examples. If you write that a person put a lot of effort into helping the group, give examples. In other words, for every assertion you make, give examples.
Your memos should be honest and specific. For this assignment you should:
– assign a grade to each member using percentages (ex. 72% = C-);
– write a memo to each member of your group;
– use memo format;
– include all the guidewords: DATE, TO, FROM, SUBJECT, and CC;
– include the group number and peer’s grade in the subject line (ex. Group 27: Peer Evaluation 82%);
– state the purpose of the memo and the criteria in an introductory paragraph;
– be certain to use the same criteria for each person you evaluate;
– use headings to break up the data in your evaluation (by criteria);
– support the assigned grade with details and examples;
– submit one document containing all of your peer memos (enter page break before each one) via Canvas by May 11; and
– email your memos (individually) to your peers on May 12.
Your primary audience (TO) is the person being evaluated. Therefore, you may use “I” and “you” in your memos. Since I am your secondary audience, my name will be in the CC line (which comes after the TO line).
