To prepare:
Review the Learning Resources for this Discussion, paying special attention to the case of Phineas Gage in Chapter 3 of the course textbook, as you consider the areas of the brain that regulate emotional behavior.
Analyze the environmental and biological factors that influence aggression (e.g., brain structures and the transmitter and hormonal systems).
Assess the legal plea, “not guilty by reason of insanity,” which has historically implied that the defendant cannot control themselves or cannot comprehend right from wrong. Take a position on whether or not there is a biological justification for such a plea.
Describe at least two biological factors that influence aggression. Provide examples for each factor.
Describe at least two environmental factors influencing aggression. Provide examples for each factor.
Explain your position on whether or not there is a biological justification for the legal plea “not guilty by reason of insanity.” Provide at least one example.
