Students will be researching and writing about two different licensed childcare programs. You will research and read about Head Start program and California State Preschool Programs (CSPP). You will compare and contrast the two programs in an essay between 5 and 10 pages long.
This is used to assessment the following SLO’s:
SLO # 3 – DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICE. Assess early childhood settings, curriculum and teaching strategies utilizing indicators of quality early childhood practice that supports all children including those with diverse characteristics.
SLO # 1 – UNDERSTANDING THE ECE FIELD. Interpret best and promising teaching and care practices as defined within the field of early care and education including an historic overview, range of delivery systems, program philosophies, and ethical standards.

When writing the comparison between the two programs, please include the following:
TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION: The training and certification describes what is needed to work in each program. In other words, do they require a permit, if not, how many units, experience, etc. In addition to reading & researching the information, you can contact and interview the Director of the Center and/or you can go to VVC website and go to Child Development Department to obtain more information.
TYPE OF PROGRAM: The type of program describes what types of programs they are. For example: Who do they each serve? HISTORICAL INFLUENCE AND EDUCATIONAL MODEL: The historical influence and educational model covers the origins and structure of the programs. Look for evidence of a historical philosopher’s influence on the program model. From your reading and research, look for what specific curricular model the programs follow (for example, do they follow High Scope, Montessori, etc.) If there is no set model that is identified, then you will need to determine the educational model and historical influence based on your own analysis. GUIDANCE STRATEGIES: Look for evidence of the types of guidance strategiesand discipline policies each program uses. In your essay you should discuss the effectiveness of these strategies based on what you have learned about guidance during your program. PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH & SAFETY; PHYSICAL HEALTH & SAFETY: Discuss the importance of the health and safety of the programs. You will need to includepsychological health and psychological safety as well as physical health and physical safety. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT: Gather information about the learning environment of both programs, both indoors and outdoors.
