Task Description: Apply mathematical problem solving skills to a variety of problems at the college level.
Use what we have learned in the course and apply them to a topic of your choice using data to which you have access. Write a short paper using the equations from any chapter, with the exception of chapter 5. The goal is to find data of interest to you which can be written as ordered pairs of input values and output values. Once you have the data, graph your results so that you can examine the shape of the data’s graph and determine the type of equation to be used in the paper. Data that tends to increase uniformly can be modeled using linear functions; if the data increases or decreases as the input values increase (i.e., it curves), you will need a non-linear function such as a log function.
In this paper you will describe the process of finding the data and identifying the type of function needed. Then discuss how you created the function to model the data and use that function to make a prediction for the future. Determine if the equation found is valid for the future, if it is not explain why is it not a good predictor.
Instructions:
Write a short paper, only 2 – 2.5 pages in APA format. Perhaps the best place to learn about APA is here: Purdue Online Writing Lab
The paper must have a cover page, a short abstract (one to two sentences), a reference page and the body of the paper. Just a reminder, in APA format does not use first person. Use the outline below, it has the proper margins and font size (1″ margins, maximum of 12 point font).
Note that any graphs included in the paper cannot exceed 1/4 of a page.
The paper will be submitted to Turnitin. If more than 48% of the paper is not original work, a zero will be given for the paper
