The paper will cover a nursing research topic based on a topic that the student signs up for. The paper will be typewritten and will be at least 6 pages, but not to exceed 7 pages of text, not including reference page or title page.
Sources must include at least three resources which should include a nursing-authored book, scholarly Nursing journal articles or your textbook. Only one textbook may be used. No web sites such as .com, .edu, or .org. Sources may not be older than 2019. Sources that do not meet the criteria may be approved in advance by the classroom faculty. You will need to utilize the Keiser University Library for your resources. Deadline policy applies. Articles/texts/sources must be uploaded in their entirety to Blackboard for review by faculty (just the abstract of the articles will not suffice). Evaluation will be made using the rubric.
Paper Writing Reminders
PARAPHRASE: A paraphrase expresses the essence of the author’s idea in about the same number of words but in THE STUDENT’S OWN WORDS. Many students who believe they are paraphrasing a statement are guilty of “PLARAGIARISM.” Plagiarism, as defined as “representing the words of another as one’s own in any academic exercise.” Changing a word here and there or revising the order of phrases is not sufficient to excuse one from plagiarism, even though one gives credit to the author in a reference. If one cannot write the paraphrase without looking at the original, it is likely that it is not written in one’s own words and style. If in doubt as to how authentic the paraphrase is, look back to the original and make a critical comparison.
DIRECT QUOTATION: A direct quotation is an exact copy of a portion of the original; it may be a single word, phrase, sentence fragment, complete sentence, or one or more paragraphs. A direct quotation should be used only when one or more of the following criteria are true:
The criteria require exactness, as with a law, mathematical formula, or a statistical analysis of data.
The wording and style of the original are clearly superior in their effectiveness of expression to any way one thinks to say the same thing. In fact, the connotation and nuances may be such that paraphrasing might cause actual misinterpretation by the reader.
The paper deals with contradictory or partisan views of authors, political figures, or others. Comparison and contrast must be made in terms of their actual statements.
The statement is an assumption, a thesis statement, or an experimental hypothesis being analyzed. The exact wording of such statements is necessary to accurate and valid inquiry.
FORMAT INSTRUCTIONS: Format instructions and illustrations for citing direct quotations are found in multiple places in the 7th edition APA Manual. The APA guidelines are also available on various websites. (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/) or (http://www.apastyle.org/)
SCHOLARLY WRITING: APA includes much information regarding scholarly writing. To summarize and simplify, here are some reminders:
Avoid writing in the first person (“I,” “We”) and avoid referring to the reader (“You,” “Your” or asking a question of the reader).
Avoid colloquialisms, repetition of words and unnecessary wording. Some examples:
a) Colloquialisms: words or phrases that are taken would mean something different.
Examples: “High on drugs,” “a lot of,” “lots of,” “the same holds true,” “water broke,”
“Kids,” “giving the baby a bottle” vs. “feeding the baby with a bottle.”
b) Repetition and/or unnecessary wording – using words that emphasize what has already
been stated or using words that say the same thing as what has already been stated.
Example: “More and more…,” “often…,” “ever increasing,” “special,” and
my favorite one is this: “Needless to say….” If it is “needless to say,” why would one
say it in a scholarly paper?
c) In text citations are especially important when writing in APA style. Please follow the rules listed in the manual/sites.
RUBRIC: See Keiser rubric for paper & presentation which is posted on blackboard.
