The Week Five (Final) Project replaces a written final exam. It is designed to give you a considerable amount of flexibility regarding your choice of topic and how you construct your final project.
This is “real world”; your assignment is to identify a program which will be beneficial to your community. This is the “problem” that is part of the title of this course. We have seen projects which included budget proposals to be given to your local governing body (City Council or County Commission); PowerPoint proposals which are used in educating the public or those who would approve your program; very detailed papers written (on the order of 30 pages) and even videos constructed by students. The majority of students combine several elements into the Project. Our goal is to have you design a program which can actually be implemented in your community; it is a lasting legacy to your work in this course after you graduate. You may combine several elements for your project (such as a PowerPoint and supporting documentation). You have significant flexibility in this assignment; use your creativity!
A partial list of previous projects is below. Each of these projects were submitted by past students; they were actually implemented by the students departments or community groups. Each was innovative in that the students developed all of the materials needed to put the project into service.
Vulnerable Populations (Metro-Dade Miami)
Community Integration for Autism
Improving Relationships Between Special Needs Communities and Law Enforcement
Military Resource Officers (Patrol) Working with Veterans with PTSD
Silver Alert Program Working with the Senior Population
Training Program for Law Enforcement: Persons in Crisis
If you are in law enforcement you may approach this assignment from your perspective. If you are not in law enforcement you may approach the assignment as someone who takes an interest in your community and is asking your local government to adopt your proposed program. In either case, you should identify a need and take steps to propose a solution.
You should identify an issue that is significant in your community; that is your starting point.
The bottom line: build a program that can be implemented in your community. You may use existing programs as reference material; if you do so, you must list them at the end of your presentation. This is also an assignment in “marketing”; you are trying to “sell” your governing body on the need to adopt your program. What makes your program vital to the community? Why is this a compelling issue? Why should your project be adopted?
I chose building a program to make the relationships between the police and the African American community better.
