In other words, think about the essay question in the context of what you have learned in this subject, Introduction to Literary Studies, and in particular about genre in relation to crime fiction. Assessment task 3 is a 1200-word critical essay in response to the following question about the crime fiction short stories ‘The Tuesday Night Club’ by Agatha Christie and ‘The Jade Empress’ by Jean Kwok.
In your essay, you must address the following question:
How does crime fiction reflect contemporary issues? These issues could be about class, race, gender, justice, truth vs reality, perceptions and assumptions, ageism, human nature, capitalism, the environment, etc.
In your response make sure to address genre conventions: what makes the stories Golden Age, for example?
In this essay five sources must be used:
the two primary texts (the stories)
two academic peer-reviewed secondary sources provided in the unit
one academic peer-reviewed secondary source that you find independently
