Title Page (Must be in APA format)
Abstract: The abstract is (a one paragraph) summary of your proposal. An effective summary states:
The problem that needs to be addressed.
The Research Question(s) you are asking to address this problem.
Briefly specifies the objectives and methods of the project.
Introduction (1 page)
The introduction to your paper should explain your research so that a person who has never taken research methods can understand your paper. You should explain the problem you are addressing, the purpose of your research, and why the research is important (i.e. how will you address the problem).
Literature Review (3 pages)
This is based on your annotated bibliography (Step 2), but needs to be reformatted into a narrative. The literature explains to the reader research already conducted in your area. The literature review should be selective and critical. Discussions of work done by others should therefore lead the reader to a clear impression of how you will be building upon what has already been done and how your work differs from theirs.
Make sure to use in-text citations when citing other research – using APA style formatting.
In some cases, you may include a theoretical framework (i.e., think of your criminology/sociology courses focused on theory). If that is the case, explain what theory/theories you will use in your study.
Methods (3 pages)
This is based on your methods breakdown (Step 3), but needs to be reformatted into a narrative. This section is the heart of the proposal and should be detailed and specific.
Begin this section with a discussion of your research question(s) and hypotheses (if you have them).
Then you will outline your sampling method, data collection methods and data analysis method.
You may also include references to other studies that have conducted similar research, and how you would model some of their research methods.
Be sure to explain how your data and methods will address the research questions.
Grading Rubric (out of 20 points)
3 Points – Include proper APA formatting of the overall RP and the in-text citations/references.
3 Points – Include a well-stated Introduction and the RQ(s).
5 Points – Include a well-written Literature Review that illustrates previous research in your area of inquiry.
6 Points – Include a well-written Methods Breakdown that touches upon all the elements required for conducting a strong study.
3 – Identify Ethical Considerations you may encounter in your research.
