to the community. His parents died while he was incarcerated, and he is
estranged from his sister. While incarcerated, Marty has struggled with
substance abuse. He finds that he is more likely to use it during periods of
intense stress when he feels out of control. Marty has been diagnosed with
bipolar disorder and also experiences high levels of anxiety. He also had a
heart attack five years ago and requires medication. Marty has become an
important person inside. He served as an informal liaison between the prison
administration and the incarcerated men and helped in the prison GED program.
