You will explore and analyze food media through the lens of an anthropologist or a historian. We’ll focus on the tools of both: context and cultural analysis, chronology, ethnography, and more.
Descriiption
You will select your own food writing text, published in the last 5 years. You will construct an argumentative essay that takes your selected text and argues whether your selected text is beneficial to the genre of food writing, with special attention to whether the content of the text helps change our cultural understanding or relationship with food.
Criteria
10% Comprehensive Analysis
Student has selected an appropriate text of food writing from the last 5 years.
Student has completed appropriate research of the author, topic, and/or publication to aid in their understanding of the text.
40% Argument Development:
Student has created a clear and well-supported argument about the selected text.
Student has constructed a persuasive and well-structured argumentative essay.
Student’s argument has been supported by evidence from the text itself and the findings from the genre analysis.
30% Evaluation of Impact on the Genre:
Student has considered the broader implications of the selected text on the food writing genre as a whole.
Student has substantiated assessments of whether the text contributes positively or negatively to the genre.
Student explored how the content of the text may impact cultural understanding and relationships with food.
20% Clarity and Communication:
Student’s argument is well-structured and organized.
Student’s writing style is clear and concise, with an easy-to-follow analysis.
Student provides specific examples and evidence from their selected texts to support their findings.

~1000 words (approx. 3-4 pages double-spaced)
