academic, or work life. To communicate effectively, you will need to use appropriate
verbal and non-verbal responses to strengthen and build your relationships with your
colleagues and peers.
Instructions:
In this assignment, you will observe others’ non-verbal communication in a place where
you interact with people regularly. Select a place where you can observe people for at
least 15 minutes. It would be helpful to take notes about the observation.
Places to consider could be a break room, restaurant, coffee shop, home, office,
grocery store, local religious institution, a subway ride, Zoom, or another virtual social
platform, etc.
Write a 1- 2-page response about your observations and address the following:
• The non-verbal cues, such as body language, facial expressions, eye contact,
and touch that you observed. Was there anything surprising or exciting that you
noticed?
• How did nonverbal communication affect the interaction you observed?
• Include a personal reflection on how you will adjust your nonverbal
communication style when interacting with others in your professional, academic,
and social environments.
