Research Question: How do narrative techniques utilized in Dionne Brand’s ‘At the Full and Change of the Moon’ and Marie-Elena John’s ‘Unburnable’ address the challenge posed by uncertain historical narratives, and what do they reveal about how myth memory and history are weaved together in Caribbean
Justification: I found the concept of magical realism in both novels fascinating as a huge fan of fantasy novels. The ways in which each novel portrays mysticism in the real world feel very grounded and the way that each weaves it with historical accounts is very cool. In both Unburnable and AFCM there is no solid evidence for how history went down, there is only word of mouth and personal anecdotes to keep information alive. However each does this in a very unique way, Unburnable is centered around Lilian finding out her history through anecdotes from family and her own memory while the reader jumps back and forth in time.
