This Essay is over Chapters 3, 4 & 5
TOPIC
Study all of the material in Chapters 3, 4 & 5, considering the research on the social, emotional, and cognitive development of infants, toddlers and young children. Pick the best/most interesting theories/research/developmental issues from any combination of Chapters 3, 4 and/or 5, you do not have to use them all.
After you have a good understanding of the theories and research, write an answer the following question:
You have a friend who is pregnant and is also getting ready to move in with her partner who is divorced and has full custory of two children that are 3 and 7 years old. She knows you took a class on Lifespan psychology, and so she asks you: “I know babies and children need basic things like good nutrition, physical safety, and love, but what are the things that I can specifically do as a caregiver for these young children to help raise kids who are cognitively, socially, and emotionally healthy?”
Provide a written answer to this friend that is based on the psychological research, picking THREE important things that adults can do to help meet the psychological needs of children aged 1 to 10. Explain each theory/issue clearly, in detail, and in your own words. Explain HOW and WHY each of these three things are meeting the social, emotional, and/or cognitive needs (do not address physical needs) of young children, and also provide a specific EXAMPLE of exactly how adults can talk to or interact with a child to achieve that developmental goal. Pick the best/most important theories/research – you may use any combination of cognitive, social, or emotional development, you do not have to cover them all.
BASIC FORMAT
Have an introductory paragraph, and then a minimum of at least 3 additional paragraphs – one for each theory/developmental need that you cover. (You may have more than one paragraph per theory, this is just the minimum). And then also have a concluding paragraph, so each essay will be between 5 to 9 paragraphs.
For each issue/theory that you present you must provide the source of the psychological information, which must come from the course materials for Chapters 3, 4 and 5. Do not use outside sources, only course materials. Use an informal citation such as: (Textbook, Chapter 3) or (PowerPoint, Chapter 5) or (Handout, Chapter 4), this does not need to be in APA format and a page number is helpful but not required. Failure to cite the course (the Chapter and the which course resource you are referring to – textbook, PowerPoint, guest lecture, or handout) will result in a penalty.
Remember that this is a college assignment, and college-level writing is expected.
The Essay is worth a total of 50 points. This assignment must be completed individually by each student, getting help with proofreading is fine, but assistance with the answers themselves is not allowed – everything in the essay must be the student’s own original ideas and writing.
Be sure to clearly answer all aspects of each essay assignment. Explain the relevant research, stay clearly focused on the assigned questions, and support everything with the research from the textbook and other course materials.

GETTING STARTED
Begin by thinking about the assigned real-life issues/questions – review all of the relevant course material, thinking about the assigned topic you will write about.
Go through the textbook, PowerPoints, and handouts, looking for the specific psychological theories/research to apply to the assigned question. Be sure the 3 theories you select are meaningful, important, and that you can both explain it in your own words and also provide a clear real-life example of how to apply it with specific actions and/or words.
DRAFT REVIEW
Once you have found the 3 different psychological theories/issues you want to use from the assigned chapters, begin writing your answers. Give yourself time to write a draft, then take a break, and come back to revise it.
At any time you may schedule an appointment to have our TA Ally review your draft for you. You can make an appointment with Ally here.Links to an external site.
Drafts cannot be accepted over email, a Zoom appointment is required in order to provide meaningful feedback. You may email your draft beforehand, and then plan to share your screen to show your draft during the meeting.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
Answer all of the assigned questions, keeping it focused and to the point. Be detailed, clear, and specific, but also keep it focused and readable.
For each of the 3 theories be very sure to do 3 things: clearly EXPLAIN the psychological theories and reasearch, explain HOW AND WHY each issue is important to healthy development, and present a real-life EXAMPLE of how to apply each issue/goal in real life, providing concrete actions and/or words an adult can use to promote this in the healthy direction of development.
